Parent Volunteers Needed

Thursday, February 9th is the annual OHES Kinderfasching and many volunteers are needed for this popular event. German Game Day is also in need of volunteers on February 16th. Both events are afterschool until 4:30. Please email to volunteer at immersionliaison@orangehuntpta.org

Bingo Night – Prize Donations

BINGO Night is just around the corner and it’s that time of year that we start collecting prizes!  Thanks to the kindness and generosity of our school families and community, we have been lucky enough to provide each player with some sort of prize, even if they did not win at BINGO and we want to continue that tradition.

If your child received duplicate gifts or simply something they don’t really care to have this year, please ask them to consider donating them to their school to help make this another fun community event for all. Also they may consider looking through their room at past received items that they have never opened or played with. These might make great homes to other kids at OHES!

Starting January 9th there will be a box labeled BINGO PRIZES in the school lobby for contributions. Please drop them there at your convenience. Watch your News You Choose for more info about Bingo Night on February 24th! Contact: Beth Shalhoub at shalhoub@cox.net

Be a HOOT’S HERO

We need your support for the armchair fundraiser. Our PTA is dedicated to providing activities and services to our school community without asking our students to sell things.  They are able to accomplish this through donations from our families. Please take a moment and donate today. We are excited to offer a whole school dance party when we reach our goal!  Help us put a little boogie in our step and DONATE TODAY: http://register.orangehuntpta.org.  Look for the flyer today in your child’s backpack.  Thank you for your continued support of our school-wide programs!

Box Top Challenge Results

Congratulations to Mrs. Saddler (1555), Mrs. Tessler, (1614)  and Mrs. Simmonsen’s (1189) classes for their collection of the MOST Box Tops for the fall challenge! Their classes will have a pizza and treat party next week.

Thank you to all who participated and helped raise $2,045.00 for OHES!  We would like to give a special shout out to Garrett Carter who extended the collection request to his neighbors and family as far as Minnesota who helped him collect over 1,100 box tops on his own.  Great job, Garrett!!

Please continue to collect tops for the Spring collection!

Vote YES on the Meals Tax!

The Orange Hunt PTA supports the proposed Fairfax County meals tax because the added revenue will directly benefit Fairfax County Public Schools, making it possible for FCPS to continue to raise teacher salaries to bring them in line with neighboring counties without having to cut any of the student programs that make FCPS the great school system it is.

If approved, the 4% tax on restaurant meals and certain prepared foods would generate $99 million in its first year (28% of which would be paid by non-Fairfax County residents), and 70% of the revenue would be dedicated to FCPS. This source of revenue would diversify Fairfax County’s tax base and take pressure off residential real estate taxes. A 4% meals tax would add 20 cents to a $5 fast food meal, 40 cents to a $10 fast casual meal, or $4 to a $100 restaurant meal. Virtually all neighboring jurisdictions have a meals tax – and we pay a tax to Alexandria, Arlington and DC whenever we go out to eat there. Why not keep some of that revenue here where it will benefit county residents, teachers and students? Please consider voting YES on the meals tax question when you fill out your ballot on November 8!

For more information, please see the pamphlet from the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors or contact advocacy@orangehuntpta.org.

Help Keep Our Kids Safe – Safety Chairperson Needed

The PTA recently added a Safety Chairperson position in response to concerns about safety at the crosswalk at Huntsman and Spellman and this position is currently vacant.  The families that use this crosswalk have made many attempts through the county, local police and school board to get better safety at the crosswalk due to several near misses and unsafe crossing conditions, but no solution has been found.  The chair would organize efforts to find a solution to this issue and address any future safety concerns that arise.

Everyone can help by using Kiss and Ride for drop offs, following the parking rules on Huntsman Road and obeying school speed limits when driving.  If you are interested in the safety chair position or would like to help out, please contact the PTA at info@orangehuntpta.org.

Laternenfest

All OHES families are invited to Laternenfest on Friday, November 11th.  Please click here to RSVP and volunteer to ensure lantern making supplies and refreshments are available for all.  See flyer for additional details.

Odyssey of the Mind

Odyssey of the Mind (OotM) teaches creative problem-solving methods in a team based environment.  OotM appeals to boys and girls with a wide range of interests, and most have such a good time they return year after year. The kids use creativity to solve an open ended long-term problem. The teams learn to identify challenges and develop creative solutions. And the kids are even rewarded for thinking outside of the box. Along the way they develop the skills to solve problems — great and small — for a lifetime.  See flyer for more information.

Greetings Orange Hunt Art Lovers!

If interested in reaching our community of consumers with your brand, purchase an ad.  Contact: directory@orangehuntpta.org.

Fall Fest Postponed Indefinitely

We know the Fall Fest is a well-loved activity, but due to a lack of volunteers, it will not be held this Friday as originally scheduled.

We have made the decision to postpone it indefinitely. We would love to host a family event like Fall Fest for our OHES community this year – if you are interested in helping in any way (big or small) please let one of the PTA board members know.

Thank you.

2016-17 PTA Reflections—What is Your Story?

It’s time to tell your story with PTA Reflections, a National PTA program that encourages students to express themselves through original works of art. Judging is organized through the Orange Hunt PTA and every participating student is recognized at an awards reception in January.

Reflect on this year’s theme “What is Your Story?” to create an individual work of art in one or more of these six categories:  visual art, photography, music composition, literature, film production, or dance choreography.  Use your summer experiences or your hopes for the new school year as inspiration for your artwork. This program is FREE and open to students of all grade levels and abilities and includes a category for special needs students as well.

A drop box for entries is available in the school office.  We will be accepting entries through Friday, October 28th.

Please visit http://www.vapta.org/members-only/student-programs/reflections for details on how to participate.

If you’d like the chance to win $100, it’s also time to begin thinking about a suggested theme for the 2018-2019 Reflections program. Contact Jennifer Augusti at reflections@orangehuntpta.org  for more information.
